Ten fashion mistakes men make

Sandals and SocksYou don’t have to win an award for the best dressed man of the year, however if you really want to be successful meeting and dating women you should pay some attention to how you dress.

Here are the top ten mistakes I see that guys often make

#1 White socks

White socks should only be worn with your gym kit, or by Michael Jackson. That is all.

#2 Black belt with brown shoes

Your belt should match the colour of your shoes. So, if you have dark brown shoes, wear a dark brown belt. Black belt with brown shoes is a big no-no.

#3 Baggy clothes

Unless you are trying to make it as a hip-hop star, but clothes that actually fit you. There’s nothing worse than a guy in an ill-fitting T-shirt or shirt.

Another tip if you’re skinny, or if you’re belly’s a little bigger than it can be – slogans or designs that go across the chest draw the eye away from your stomach and across your chest. This makes your belly appear smaller and your chest bigger.

#4 Get your colours right

If you’re not sure what colours suit you best, or go together, ask someone who does know. Shop assistants can be helpful with this, or there’s a great guide here.

#5 Labels everywhere

You might think wearing clothes with lots of big logos on advertising all of the cool brands you are wearing is great, but you’d be wrong. If you like to wear big-name brands, go for the items that don’t have the logos scrawled all over them. They are much cooler.

#6 Short sleeved shirts

There are a few exceptions for this, but if in doubt don’t wear them.

#7 Going to the gym or the office?

White trainers should be worn with gym clothes, not with your suit. Likewise, if you are on the way to the gym, leave your coat that you wear to the club at home. Mixing sportswear with formal or going out wear does not usually look good.

#8 Slogans

I was in two minds about including this one. Sometimes T-shirts with slogans can be funny. Personally, I really like this one. However, I’d say this one is not so cool.

The point to remember here is T-shirts with “funny” slogans on will outwardly display a part of your personality. Make sure it’s a good part….

#9 Keep them clean

If it’s got stains on – wash it or throw it away. Dirty clothes are not good, no matter how cool they once were.

#10 Too much jewellery

Along with baggy clothes, unless you are an up and coming rap artist, this is another no-no. If you’re not sure and want to play it safe, stick to a maximum of:

  • One ring per hand
  • One bracelet
  • One watch
  • One necklace

If this is an area you really struggle with and if you can afford it, consider hiring a personal stylist. A good one will talk to you about the kind of look you are going for, go through your existing wardrobe with you, then take you shopping for new things.
